2010 MTLRD Bootcamp

poster

Starting Tuesday August 10th, MTLRD will be holding their annual bootcamp. Camp is twice a week, on Tuesdays and Sundays, from August 10 to November 2.

All practices will be at Le Taz (8931 avenue Papineau,Montréal,Québec,H2M 0A5). Tuesday night practices run from 7pm to 9:30pm, and Sunday practices run from 6pm to 9pm.

You NEED to complete the entire Boot Camp process first in order to be considered part of our league, and an official member of the Smash Squad. The Smash Squad is a group of recruts who practices with the league and will be elligible for tryouts. They are not yet on one of our 3 existing home teams. Being on the Smash Squad doesn’t mean you will make it on a team. Our league is advancing so quickly, we need recruits to understand that they need to be serious, dedicated and motivated in becoming athletes.Tryouts are TBA.

We strongly encourage you to start skating NOW . That way we can focus more time on the needed skills than skating skills.
Camp is separated in five levels of skills to work on and a Newbie can NOT move to the next level if she did not pass the previous level.

There will be a tight structure for all the Boot Camps and including set testing dates. It is designed to give enough time for ‘campers’ to learn, but is set at a fast pace so that by the time the league comes back from the off-season on November 2nd, Newbies will be “up to speed” and ready to join league practices.
If a ‘camper’ FAILS a level, she can’t continue to the next level right away. If she fails the same Level TWICE, she is not able to continue with boot camp.

Also Note: Due to the Boot Camps schedule **NO NEW GIRLS CAN JOIN AFTER AUGUST 22nd!** (more info)...

The People Of MTLRD: Jess Bandit

poster

She’s the President of the league and the captain of both Les Filles du Roi and the New Skids on the Block. Jess Bandit is the sweetest thing that can knock you off your skates with a sideways glance. She’s smart, she’s tough and she looks good in neon – she’s got it all.

Q: What brought you to Montreal Roller Derby?
Georgia W Tush asked me to come out when she first started the league in summer of 2006. I refused cause I didn’t understand the game, and what I was suppose to do and if it was right for me….since I didn’t ready skate. She asked me again in the fall of 2006. I accepted to come out; gut instinct. After 1 practice I was hooked.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of roller derby?
Its a sport that I’m actually good at. I love the community feeling that players have from all over the world…

The People Of MTLRD: Johnny Capote

poster

When it comes to tough jobs - well, someone’s gotta do it. Johnny Capote is often just the man for the job. The coach of the rowdy Racaille, and the brains behind the MTLRD boutcast system - Dr. Capote helps out the league in many ways. We pay him by way of incredibly cheap beer, and he seems to be alright with that.

Q: What brought you to Montreal Roller Derby?
I play in a band with one of the originals El Kaboom. I caught on right from the get go as a fan and sorta got kicked into coaching along the way.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of roller derby?
The offence and defence don’t face each other, it’s a whole new way of thinking….
