Montreal overpowers Queen City, 331-62
Montréal, April 20th 2012 – Montreal’s own New Skids on the Block faced the Queen City Roller Girls’ Lake Effect Furies for the Beast of the East opening game last Friday night. Last season, the Skids hosted the Buffalo team in a semi-private game at Le Taz. The neon clad Montrealers dominated throughout the game, taking the win 302-24. After a year on the road, the Skids were back in the Arena St-Louis in a rare home game event against the Furies. The bout began with a very strong start for the Skids whose defense held up the Buffalo jammers from making points on the first 4 jams while Montreal was relentlessly scoring. The New Skids jammers’ performances, notably from Apocalipstick, Ti-Loup and Lil Mama, suggested early on that perharps a repeat of last year’s bout was in the books.
B’kini Whacks was able to put 4 points on the board breaking the goose egg for Buffalo on jam 5. Penalty troubles for the Montreal jammers quickly followed, allowing a powerjam for the Buffalo team and abled BJ Harmstrong to score some points for her team. The trouble for the Skids’ jammers didn’t stop there when Lil’Mama went to the box for a backblock major, quickly followed by the Furies jammer. From that point, the Furies had trouble keeping players away from the penalty box, allowing the Montrealers to extend their lead. Powerjams with few blockers on the track for Buffalo became very lucrative point scoring opportunities for the New Skids, and the first period ended at 152-25 for the Montreal team.
In the second half, Chasing Amy, Cheese Grater, The Honey Badger and Georgia W. Tush (in her first game since World Cup) were added to the Montreal jammer rotation. There was some more penalty trouble ahead for Buffalo jammers and blockers, but the Furies kept their heads up, demonstrating a solid pack work, lead notably by Vajenna Warrior. Despite these last good jams from Buffalo, the Montreal team was way ahead of the Furies and the game finished 331-62 for the Skids.
