Montreal Roller Derby 2016 Season Recap

March 11, 2017
The 2016 season started off with a bang as long time MTLRD jammer and crowd favourite Iron Wench returned to La Racaille. The team started off the year strong and were winners of the first home league tournament of the year, the Round Robin.
La Racaille continued their winning streak by taking home the 1st place trophy at MTLRD’s Beast of the East tournament for the first time since 2009, with another Montreal team, Les Filles du Roi, coming in 2nd over 16 teams at the tournament.
However, La Racaille were not able to keep up their streak for the entire season. The Contrabanditas had an incredibly strong season, winning every single season game they played against La Racaille and Les Filles du Roi. Les Contrabantias won the championship on August 13th, an undefeated victory.
Outside of the home teams, The Smash Squad (MTLRD’s rookie team) came in 3rd place at The Fresh and Furious fresh meat tournament in Toronto and won both of their exposition games this summer against RDCute (Quebec) and Hammer City (Hamilton).
2016 was also exciting for international reasons! The Sexpos (B Team) won the Rust Riot tournament in Seattle. Montreal hosted the WFTDA Division 1 playoffs, becoming the first city outside of the US to do so. It was a major success, with over _ attendees and our very own New Skids on the Block (A team) coming in 3rd place after Texas and London, securing their ticket to the WFTDA Championships in Portland (for the first time ever!).
At Champs, The Skids unfortunately lost their first game against LA, but it was an incredibly close game and the chance to play in Championships is one our league will not soon forget!
